Voltage Regulators IC

A regulated and there­fore constant, "clean" DC output voltage is a prere­quisite for the relia­bility and longevity of many electrical components. Without voltage regulator ICs to stabilise oper­ating voltages, modern house­hold appli­ances, our entire ITC and enter­tain­ment equip­ments as well as complex indus­trial sys­tems would no longer be feasible.

Unlike transformators and rectifiers, voltage regulators can eliminate the proportion of unde­sirable AC vol­tage com­ponents (residual ripple) still present here. The regu­lator ICs are used, for example, for short-circuit pro­tection or current limi­tation in switching circuits. There are different types of regu­lators, for example with AC-DC con­verter charac­teristics for different high and low voltage ranges. Switching and linear regu­lators are the most important IC configurations.

Switching Regulators

  • Switching the input voltage using a power tran­sistor in rapid suc­cession
  • Advantages: High efficiency, low heat gene­ration, step-up/step-down/nega­tive vol­tage operation
    Disadvantages: More complex hard­ware/circuit design, higher noise

Linear Voltage Regulators

  • Reduction of the input voltage to the set out­put voltage using a power tran­sistor (resistive load)
  • Advantages: Simpler circuit, low noise
    Disadvantage: Lower efficiency, higher heat gene­ration, only step-down opera­tion possible
  • Cross-regulator type : Load in parallel with the regu­lator circuit; only for small power classes
  • Longitudinal regulator type : Low-drop vol­tage regu­lator; low-loss

The exact choice of voltage regulator there­fore depends very much on the requirements:

  • Efficiency
  • Size
  • Cost
  • Fixed or adjustable output voltage
  • With/without AC/DC conversion
