Voltage Regulators IC
A regulated and therefore constant, "clean" DC output voltage is a prerequisite for the reliability and longevity of many electrical components. Without voltage regulator ICs to stabilise operating voltages, modern household appliances, our entire ITC and entertainment equipments as well as complex industrial systems would no longer be feasible.
Unlike transformators and rectifiers, voltage regulators can eliminate the proportion of undesirable AC voltage components (residual ripple) still present here. The regulator ICs are used, for example, for short-circuit protection or current limitation in switching circuits. There are different types of regulators, for example with AC-DC converter characteristics for different high and low voltage ranges. Switching and linear regulators are the most important IC configurations.
Switching Regulators
- Switching the input voltage using a power transistor in rapid succession
- Advantages: High efficiency, low heat generation, step-up/step-down/negative voltage operation
Disadvantages: More complex hardware/circuit design, higher noise
Linear Voltage Regulators
- Reduction of the input voltage to the set output voltage using a power transistor (resistive load)
- Advantages: Simpler circuit, low noise
Disadvantage: Lower efficiency, higher heat generation, only step-down operation possible - Cross-regulator type : Load in parallel with the regulator circuit; only for small power classes
- Longitudinal regulator type : Low-drop voltage regulator; low-loss
The exact choice of voltage regulator therefore depends very much on the requirements:
- Efficiency
- Size
- Cost
- Fixed or adjustable output voltage
- With/without AC/DC conversion
